Wired Internet Help

Important: Wired Internet is no longer a dial-up Internet service provider. Legacy members who previously used Wired Internet may contact register@wired2.net by E-Mail with proof of their former USENET usage as part of the register process. Verified legacy members will receive an honorary 10 MB web space and an exclusive unreleased @wired2.net hosted E-Mail account, free of charge!

      What is Wired Internet now?

This site is a restored 90s service based on the original Wired Internet site. It does not provide your Internet connection, telephone dial-up access, DNS service, or modem access. Your normal broadband, mobile, or other Internet connection is used to reach Wired Internet, though plans to enable classic browser access are underway.

Current services may include a personal homepage at www.wired2.net/~username/, an @wired2.net forwarding address, and selected hosted mailboxes.

      Registration and verification help

      • Send your request to register@wired2.net.
      • The registration system may send a verification message back to the address you contacted us from.
      • Reply from the same email address and include the verification code exactly as shown.
      • The automatic verification message is normally sent only once while your request is pending.
      • If you do not see the verification mail, check your spam or junk folder for the message.

How do I upload my homepage?

Personal webspace is uploaded with SFTP. Ordinary FTP is discontinued due to security issues.

      SettingValue
ProtocolSFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol
      Hostwired2.net
      Port22
      UsernameYour Wired Internet username
      PasswordYour Wired Internet account password
      Web directory/public_html

Your main page should normally be named index.html. Once uploaded, visit:

      https://wired2.net/~username/

Replace username with the account name you were given.

      My homepage does not appear

      • Make sure your start page is named index.html.
      • Make sure the file was uploaded inside /public_html, not beside it.
      • Refresh the page in your browser. A cached copy may still be displayed.
      • File names on the server are case-sensitive. Picture.GIF and picture.gif are different names.
      • If you receive a Forbidden or Permission Denied error, contact Wired Internet via the support email, support@wired2.net, rather than changing random server permissions.

I cannot log in to my webspace

      • Check that the connection type is SFTP, not FTP or FTPS.
      • Use port 22.
      • Use the account username you were issued. Your forwarding email name may be different from your webspace username.
      • If your program warns that the server's host key is new, confirm that you really connected to wired2.net before accepting it.
      • Webspace accounts are restricted to file transfer.

I cannot upload any more files

Personal webspace accounts currently have a small 5 MB disk allowance, in keeping with the original small-homepage style of the service. Remove files you no longer need, reduce large images, or contact Wired Internet if something appears to be using space unexpectedly.

How does my @wired2.net forwarding address work?

A forwarding address such as yourname@wired2.net receives mail at Wired Internet and then passes it to the external mailbox you registered.

A forwarding address is not automatically a hosted mailbox. It normally has no password, Inbox, IMAP login, or Thunderbird account of its own. Read the message in the destination mailbox to which it forwards. Hosted mailboxes are currently a Wired2 exclusive perk, due to setup times and maintenance.

      Forwarded mail is not arriving

      • Check the Spam or Junk folder at your destination mailbox.
      • Make sure you are testing the exact @wired2.net address that was assigned to you.
      • Allow a few minutes for delivery before sending repeated tests.
      • If your destination email address has changed, contact Wired Internet so the forward can be updated.
      • If a sender receives a bounce message, include that bounce when asking for help; it often contains the reason delivery failed.

Setting up a hosted Wired Internet mailbox

Only use these settings if you were specifically issued a hosted mailbox. Forwarding-only addresses cannot log in.

      SettingIncoming MailOutgoing Mail
      Servermail.wired2.netmail.wired2.net
      ProtocolIMAPSMTP
      Port993587
      SecuritySSL/TLSSTARTTLS
      AuthenticationNormal passwordNormal password
UsernameYour issued mailbox usernameYour issued mailbox username

For example, the registration mailbox address is register@wired2.net, but its login username is simply register.

      Mail login or sending problems

      • Do not use an email forwarding alias as a mailbox username unless you were separately issued a hosted mailbox.
      • Incoming mail should use IMAP port 993 with SSL/TLS.
      • Outgoing mail should use SMTP port 587 with STARTTLS and authentication.
      • If your mail program repeatedly retries an old password, correct or remove the saved password before trying again.
      • The server automatically blocks repeated failed login attempts for security, so many incorrect attempts may cause a temporary lockout.

      Password and security help

      • Never send your password in a normal email message.
      • If you believe somebody else knows your password, contact Wired Internet and ask for it to be changed.
      • Repeated incorrect logins may be automatically blocked. Wait before retrying if you have made many failed attempts.
      • Wired Internet will not ask you to disable encryption or certificate checks in order to use mail.

      Still having trouble?

Send a message to support@wired2.net. Include your Wired Internet username or forwarding address, what you were trying to do, the exact error message, and approximately when the problem happened.

Please do not include passwords, private keys, or other secret login information. Wired2 will never ask for your password or any sensitive information.
